Editor's note: Last week, TechCrunch reported that Byju’s had held conversations about shutting down WhiteHat Jr, the coding company that became a rage during the pandemic and then disintegrated as quickly into ignominy and oblivion. The move, as per reports, is being discussed as part of an ongoing cost-cutting exercise at Byju’s. India’s largest edtech company is facing a severe cash crunch as it tries to overcome mounting expenses and record losses in its quest for profitability. Byju’s denied any plans to shut down WhiteHat Jr. But the news has reignited talks about the future of the coding company. Founder Byju Raveendran told me that the company is “changing it [WhiteHat Jr] for organic growth”, without any further explanation. It is not clear what this optimization for organic growth means. Especially since the entire revenue is now organic in the absence of marketing and advertising. By the looks of it, all non-performing parts of the business might be closed.
